Crossing into Southern Ontario from Manitoulin Island was like arriving in a different world. After nearly a month of remote roads and 100 km between small towns,  I was suddenly hitting villages and shops on a regular basis with traffic everywhere. There were still a few opportunities for a little bit of wild exploration though and on my first day off the ferry I took one of these and camped in the… Read More

Winnipeg was a great spot to take a day off. The hostel was a little odd and could have certainly done with a clean out, but it did the job of putting a roof over my head and giving me a bed in the city for a couple of nights. I had a few jobs that I needed to get done in the city and supplies to pick up. I also was… Read More

It was with a sense of growing trepidation that I landed at LAX airport. Looking out of the window I could see the heaving sprawl that is LA and had just flown over more people than live in the whole of New Zealand. I didn’t really want to get off the plane to be honest. New Zealand had become so comfortable. America by contrast seemed big, uninviting and just a little scary. … Read More

Landing in New Zealand was an incredible feeling. Australia had been conquered and I was returning to one of my favourite places in the world. I am very lucky to have been here twice before and it very much felt like I was coming home. Nowhere else in the world have I ever felt quite so alive. I spent a few days doing jobs in Auckland staying with an old friend of… Read More

Having spent a relaxed night on Bondi Beach I made my way into to heart: Circular Quay, the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. These iconic monuments always cause me to look on in wonder. Having arrived by bike and travelled so far to get there was a great feeling. Rather than battle… Read More

London to Prague; New York to Chicago; Paris to Rome. Each of these are journeys around 1200 km in length. The Nullarbor Crossing is another. 1200 km from Norseman in Western Australia, to Ceduna in South Australia. The big difference is, that between Norseman and Ceduna there are no towns, and only 11 shops or “roadhouses” as they are known here. Indeed there are several stretches over 150 km with no human… Read More

I’m now 12 days and over 1000 km in so I thought I would reflect on what has already been a remarkably eventful trip. Before I left, somebody said they would be interested to know if the trip met my expectations and if not, how did it differ? I think they meant for me to answer this at the end. I’m sure I will return to it then but now seems like… Read More
